The Sicilian wolf (Canis lupus cristaldii) was a rare subspecies of gray wolf native to the island of Sicily, Italy. It was the smallest known wolf subspecies in Europe, characterized by its slender body, light grayish-brown fur, and shorter legs compared to mainland wolves. Typically measuring around 1050 mm (41.34 inches) in body length and standing about 50–60 cm (19.7–23.6 inches) at the shoulder, it was well-adapted to the island’s mountainous terrain and Mediterranean climate.

The Sicilian wolf primarily fed on small mammals, birds, and livestock, but habitat loss and human persecution led to its extinction in the early 20th century. Last officially sighted in the 1920s, it is considered a symbol of Sicily’s lost wildlife heritage.
