They share a relation to Shirvan and Kuba rugs, which were woven in the same region. The antique Dagestan rugs and carpets use a small scale design, covering a large area with intricate detail, along with pattern repetition. This format was adapted with ease by Dagestan rug weavers to produce prayer rugs by adding on a simplified mihrab or niche at the top of the motif.
